Qualifications to Register to Vote

  • be a United States citizen;
  • be 18 years old by December 31 of the year in which you file this form (note: you must be 18 years old by the date of the general, primary or other election in which you want to vote);
  • live at your present address at least 30 days before an election;
  • not be in prison or on parole for a felony conviction and;
  • not be adjudged mentally incompetent by a court;
  • not claim the right to vote elsewhere.

How and Where to Register

  • You can register in person at your county board of elections or at any New York State Agency-Based voter registration center.
  • You may also submit your voter application form at the Department of Motor Vehicles, either in person or on their website if you already have DMV-issued identification.
  • You can request a New York State Voter Registration form by mail by entering your name directly into our mailing list database.
  • You can call 1-800-FOR-VOTE hotline to request a voter application.

Voter Registration Deadlines

June 26, 2018 Federal Primary Deadlines

MAIL REGISTRATION (N.Y. Election Law Section 5-210(3))
Application must be postmarked no later than June 1, 2018 and received by a board of elections no later than June 6, 2018 to be eligible to vote in the Primary.

IN PERSON REGISTRATION (N.Y. Election Law Sections 5-210, 5-211, 5-212)
You may register at your local board of elections or any state agency participating in the National Voter Registration Act, on any business day throughout the year but, to be eligible to vote in the State and Local Primary, your application must be received no later than June 1, 2018

CHANGE OF ADDRESS (N.Y. Election Law Section 5-208(3))
Notices of change of address from registered voters received by June 6, 2018 by a county board of elections must be processed and entered in the records in time for the State & Local Primary.

September 13, 2018 State and Local Primary Deadlines

MAIL REGISTRATION (N.Y. Election Law Section 5-210(3))
Application must be postmarked no later than August 19, 2018 and received by a board of elections no later than August 24, 2018 to be eligible to vote in the Primary.

You may register at your local board of elections or any state agency participating in the National Voter Registration Act, on any business day throughout the year but, to be eligible to vote in the State and Local Primary, your application must be received no later than August 19, 2018

November 6, 2018 General Election Deadlines

MAIL REGISTRATION (N.Y. Election Law Section 5-210(3))
Applications must be postmarked no later than October 12, 2018 and received by a board of elections no later than October 17, 2018 to be eligible to vote in the General Election.

IN PERSON REGISTRATION (N.Y. Election Law Sections 5-210, 5-211, 5-212)
You may register at your local board of elections or any state agency participating in the National Voter Registration Act, on any business day throughout the year but, to be eligible to vote in the General Election, your application must be received no later than October 12, 2018. If honorably discharged from the US Military or have become a naturalized US Citizen after October 13, 2018, you may register in person at the Board of Elections up until October 27, 2018.

CHANGE OF ADDRESS (N.Y. Election Law Section 5-208(3))
Notices of change of address from registered voters received by October 17, 2018 by a county board of elections must be processed and entered in the records in time for the General Election.

CHANGE OF ENROLLMENT (N.Y. Election Law Section 5-304(3))
An application to change one’s party enrollment for 2019 must be received by the board of elections no later than October 12, 2018.
